    Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, until soft.

    Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute, just until fragrant.

    Add tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.

    Add chopped tomatoes (or canned), vegetable broth, sugar, salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil.

    Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    Remove from heat. Add fresh basil leaves. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth, or work in batches with a countertop blender.
